Discussion:
Monero node does not work in Mageia 8

I have the Moneto Blockchain in an encrypted partition. In the Mageia 8
distribution appears an error and does not update. This is not a program
problem because the same program works in two other different
distributions on the same computer.
I downloaded monero-gui-linux-x64-v0.18.1.1.tar.bz2 and after verifying it's
gpg sig and shasum unpacked and ran it up to the point where it asks if you
want to create a new wallet, etc, so I can't recreate the problem.

The screenshot doesn't include any helpful info to debug the problem for that
user.

Try creating a new user and see if it works for that user.

installation although this has made no difference in program behavior.

Following your recommendation, I created a user. It worked but began to
download Blockchain from scratch.

This is not desirable since previously downloaded blockchain is over 90%
completed. I removed the new blochchain, put symbolic links from old
Blockchain in place and changed the owner of the files with the chown
-r -v test .bitmonero.

It worked but this way I will have to change the owner of the files each
time I switch to another distribution.

That means it's some config file in the other user's home directory causing
the problem. Figuring out which one is not easy requiring a lot of trial and
error.

Meant to add, rather then changing the ownership, change the uid for the new
user to be the same as the old one.

Solved.

I created an empty home directory and gradually put back the files of
the original home.

I've used this way to solve other problems in the past. But for some
reason this time I didn't think the problem was some configuration file.

Thanks for the indication of the path to be followed for the solution.

Thanks for the update. Glad it's sorted. Keep track of what applications you
run just in case the problem comes back. Knowing which application triggered
the config problem makes it easier to fix and avoid in the future.

So which file was it that was the problem?

(I have 180000 files in my home. Hard to do that one at a time)

(I have 180000 files in my home. Hard to do that one at a time)
I keep 3 different distributions on the same
computer. Obviously I'm not going to download the same files
torrents and blochchains 3 times so I have a partition for the
files to be used by the 3 distributions.

The home directory of each distribution contains practically
only files used in distribution and symlinks of
things in common use.

Despite the amount of files in your home directory you still
can try this way to create a new home and move the files
back.

Still no statement as to which file(s) you found were the problem in
your case. I ask because if others run into your problem, it would be
helpful to know where to start looking, not wasting time looking at the
179999 other files first.

There's no way to know without copying the config files from the old home
directory, one at a time, restarting monero each time.

In my current home directory ...
$ tree -ifa .local/share/|wc -l
6113
$ tree -ifa .config|wc -l
6616
There's a lot more such as ~/.gconf/, ~/.kde4, etc.

I've tried to do it for another problem without ever figuring out which one or
which combination of config files triggered that problem.

Even limiting the selection to files that had been changed from a few days before
to after the time I first noticed the problem didn't help.

Exactly. This would take a long time and there would be not much to do
with the information about which corrupted file is.

If we knew that info could be added to the wiki for other monero users, and
reported to the authors of monero who hopefully could fix it.

I don't see any easy way to narrow it down quickly as so many config files get
rewritten on an application close even when nothing has changed, so the time stamps
don't help much.

I don't know which or which files were in trouble.

The defective files are at peace in the old Home partition. To discover
them I would have to spend a huge time testing files and would not have
much benefit to know what they would be.

Since the computer has downloaded the blockchain again, it tells me as
a case closed.

Ah, so you opened a new user, discovered that the files belonged to that
user, and simply switched the home directories. We were discussing
transferinf the files one at a time to see which worked, so I
misunderstood what you did.
Sorry
