Discussion:
MGA: Printers show up multiple times
(too old to reply)

Hi all,

on a fresh MGA9 installation I have set up 3 network printers.

Gimp, firefox, chromium show exactly what is installed, but
atril, okular, evince show every printer twice: the exact printername and
additionally the same with postfix, like printername_hostname.

Some advised to stop cups browsing deamon, but I don't have it running.
Besides this, not every application behaves like this, see above.

It's not a showstopper, but I'd like to know the reason.

Any idea? -- Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Markus

Hi all,
on a fresh MGA9 installation I have set up 3 network printers.
I am fighting a lonely rearguard action here with MGA8
It is the printer installation that causes my hesitation

I've been there every time and it requires an afternoon of pissing around.
But this time I have old screenshots and some mental notes. It may go better

PS. It's a Brother

I've a Brother printer/scanner too.

Every time I upgrade Mageia (last from MGA8 to MGA9), I visit the
Brother website:

support.brother.com,

and I search in the Linux downloads for an installer file for my printer
model:

linux-brprinter-installer-*.*.*-*.gz

(e.g. linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.3.-1-.gz)

Download that installer file, and from the Konsole unpack it:

gunzip linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.3-1.gz

Then, as root, run the tool, adding your printer name at the end of the
command.

e.g.:

bash linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.3.-1 DCP-J315W

(mind the blank space before the printer name!)

(and do not forget to type bash before the command)

In the Konsole an interactive driver installation will start. Takes some
time to answer Yes or No about ten times. The proces will download and
install two RPM files for the printer, and eventually another two RPM's
for the scanner.

Mind: at the end of the interactive installation, you have to carefully
choose between an installation for wired USB users, of wireless network
users.

Finally, I save the complete installation proces from the Konsole in a
text file on a USB stick, for future reference.

Last time I did this, the installer warned that the RPM cupswrapper
maybe will stopworking in a future version of CUPS. So maybe when MGA10
is arriving, the installer can behave different.

Regards,

Marc.

And then it asks for the device URI which baffled me the first time
through - fortunately I now have screenshots.

And despite just the drivers installed , the install scripts asks if you
want a test print. which fails

I have never had a good time with it

And I have just remembered Thunerbird.
Setting that up again is rage inducing. This time I'll back up the
config file
