It's a for profit offsite (aka cloud) storage system that appears to be based in
Luxembourg (based on ip address of website) with offices in New Zealand, and Spain.
It does have a free (in terms of money) version with 20GB storage. https://mega.io/

I am an old user I have 50GB of space. Megasync comes from a simple way
to back up. The user can configure folders for automatic synchronization.
