Thninderbird and local mail

Hello All!

I use crontab that is preset on first line to :
MAILTO=vince

This applies to all user accounts including root.

I can read all these messages using program mail but for mga v8 I had it
set to do the same using Thunderbird as a separate account as localhost.

When I requested new messages and yes I have it set to get them every 30
minutes, it also picked up the local ones.

After the upgrade to v9 this does not work at all, only the two email
accounts that I have set up.

Can anyone provide the settings for it or for a newly created account so
that this now works as I am forgetting to run a terminal program and run
mail and yes, I call it age :(

Current settings for ***@localhost are

Account name : ***@localhost

Server Settings
Enable updates for all feeds

Message Storage
Empty Deleted folder on Exit

Local Directory
/var/spool/mail

But when leaving account settings it reports an error message

The Local Directory path "/var/spool/mail" is invalid. Please pick a
different directory.

Needles to say it is not possible the change this - or I can't find out how
to

doing a ls -la to it is :
ls -la /var/spool/mail/
total 24
drwxrwxr-x 2 root mail 4096 Jan 7 12:40 ./
drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 4096 Dec 24 15:59 ../
-rw------- 1 vince vince 0 Sep 14 2022 Archives
-rw-rw-r-- 1 vince vince 2227 Jan 4 21:18 Archives.msf
-rw-r--r-- 1 vince vince 25 Feb 26 2022 msgFilterRules.dat
-rw------- 1 vince vince 0 Dec 19 12:27 Trash
-rw-rw-r-- 1 vince vince 2928 Jan 4 21:18 Trash.msf
-rw------- 1 vince vince 0 Jan 7 16:55 vince
-rw-rw-r-- 1 vince vince 3040 Dec 26 14:40 vince.msf

I am reasonably sure this was the setting for mga V8 but Thunderbird has
been updated during the v9 install.

For the other account path I can see set up is :
thunderbird/aylogcmo.default/Mail/localhost/

But I cannot set this using Browse as it does not show any folders starting
with . i.e., all the hidden one's but Dolphin is set to show them and does
show this folder as :

thunderbird/aylogcmo.default/Mail/localhost/
total 28
drwxr-xr-x 2 vince vince 4096 Feb 21 2022 ./
drwxr-xr-x 7 vince vince 4096 May 12 2023 ../
-rwxr-xr-x 1 vince vince 0 Jun 10 2017 Drafts*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 vince vince 3010 Feb 22 2022 Drafts.msf*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 vince vince 198 Sep 16 2019 filterlog.html*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 vince vince 0 Feb 15 2022 Inbox*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 vince vince 3144 Feb 26 2022 Inbox.msf*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 vince vince 25 Nov 24 2021 msgFilterRules.dat*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 vince vince 0 Feb 15 2022 Trash*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 vince vince 3865 Feb 22 2022 Trash.msf

Any ideas ?

As far as I know thunderbird does not support getting mail directory from
/var/spool.

I use dovecot, so that I can retrieve email such as from cron as either a
pop3 acccount or as an imap account.

Nope. Not a squeak .

I am not looking forward to the battle with Thunderbird when I move up
to MGA9 Bad memories from MGA8 still persist.

I went round and round and round the settings, finally discovered to be
a bad address (typo)
Thunderbird setup seems initially simple but it's far from intuitive and
becomes infuriating I was almost homicidal

Printer setup : Use Cups and it is a doodle - at least for HP, Epson,
other brands I do not know about, but it does support a long list.

I am not looking forward to the battle with Thunderbird when I move up
to MGA9  Bad memories from MGA8 still persist.
Over the recent Christmas break I did a clean install of Mageia 9, the
Thunderbird profile, emails, and files in emails are on a separate drive
(not /home but symlinked)..

I got a "heart attack" when I started Thunderbird and all the mail in
the unified mailbox vanished along with the unified mailbox itself -
that's 10's of thousands of emails. I was afraid to close Thunderbird.

Two days later, I found out that Thunderbird had moved emails that
should have gone to their mailboxes I set up years ago, from the unified
mailbox to their folders. This should have been stated at upgrade time.

It was not obvious that that is what happened on upgrade, which is why I
thought the upgrade deleted thousands of emails.

Your mileage may vary.

I once thought that expression was amusing: now it seriously conjures an
element of desperate uncertainly.
Hence my reticence about tackling the upgrade.

It will be done though, and this time on a different partition so I can
cross reference the new with the original
