Most apps will not play mp4 files.

If I launch them in Kaffeine or vlc the Desktop crashes back to the
login screen.

Vlc will not play off air TV signals without the same crash.

The mpv player will not start at all without the same crash

Xine however will play mp4 just fine

Is it possible to get some log output to survive the crash

The mga9 vdpau plugin isn't installed. I believe that lets vlc use your
Nvidia GPU's hardware acceleration for the codecs the GPU supports.

I don't have a tuner in my computer for OTA TV. It wouldn't make any
difference anyway, as I'm in the U.S. and your broadcast system is
probably different.

No problem here with mp4 files, in vlc from the tainted repos, or in
Dragon Player. I don't have it on this system, but Parole works OK on
others.

Make sure task-audio-codec and task-video-codec are installed. While it
shouldn't be necessary for playback, it wouldn't hurt to install the
tainted versions of those two tasks.

Easiest way, if you are GUI-minded like me, is to search in MCC/Install
and Remove Software.

The core versions are on the CI, and I believe are installed by default.
Updating to the tainted versions should happen if the tainted repos are
enabled, but it doesn't hurt to check.

I did search for task-video-codec; nothing - not entirely surprised.

But I have reinstalled mga9 without the updates, just vanilla setup and
vlc plays mp4 OK. so there you go, mystery deepens.

I am rendering video with mga8 so when I get the time I'll boot mga9 and
do the upgrades
Or get stupidly adventurous and reorganize the SSD partitioning and
reinstall everything. I'll go for larger swap and temp partition. Long
overdue for a clean up

After the videos render I will do the mga9 update.

I still may reorganize the SSD but some days I get overcome by "who

I would have put in codec not just code, since that produces all maner
of false postivies

Anyway tainted has both
task-codec-audio-9-1.mga9.tainted.x86_64.rpm
task-codec-video-9-1.mga9.tainted.x86_64.rpm
Not sure why your system did not pick them up. But try doing
urpmi task-codec-video-9-1
(assuming you use urpmi)
and give the error message if it refuses to install that.

Note your mirror might be bad as well.

And there it is. Bearing in mind that everything is working, is it
advised to remove old video and replace with tainted
It should happen automatically when installing updates if the tainted
repo is enabled (both release and updates), as "tainted" sorts after
(is considered greater than) "rpm"
task-codec-9-1.mga9.tainted.src.rpm
task-codec-9-1.mga9.tainted.src.rpm
After installing the tainted video codec
no apparent change
Am I missing something or did I understand you to say you installed the
sourece rpm for the codec?

If yes, then, please, try
urpmi task-codec-video
and see what happens. If there are any errors or warnings pr other
problems, please post them.

If I'm miss informed, please feel free to ignore me.

No No It was the tainted version installed through MCC.
Although why it wasn't install originally with the tainted audio codec
seems to be the the anomaly. And it still doesn't show up

[***@unimatrix ~]$ rpm -qa | grep codec
task-codec-audio-6-4.mga8.tainted
lib64gstcodecparsers1.0_0-1.18.5-1.mga8.tainted
lib64kf5codecs5-5.76.0-1.mga8
task-codec-video-6-4.mga8

lib64gstcodecs1.0_0-1.18.5-1.mga8.tainted
lib64avcodec58-4.3.6-1.mga8.tainted

Source RPM : task-codec-9-1.mga9.src.rpm
Source RPM : task-codec-9-1.mga9.tainted.src.rpm
After installing the tainted video codec
Source RPM : task-codec-9-1.mga9.src.rpm
Source RPM : task-codec-9-1.mga9.tainted.src.rpm
no apparent change
The urpmq command shows what's available in the enabled repositories, not
what's installed on that system.

Use "rpm -q task-codec-audio task-codec-video" to see what is currently
installed for those two, and
"urpmi task-codec-audio task-codec-video" to install both of the rpm
packages.

OK I'm barking up the wrong tree. I'm confusing mga9 and mga9.

So I have installed tainted video for mga8 and now

[***@unimatrix ~]$ rpm -q task-codec-audio task-codec-video
task-codec-audio-6-4.mga8.tainted
task-codec-video-6-4.mga8.tainted
[***@unimatrix ~]$
with a resounding sigh

I will boot mga9 and check that out

"Great suffering blood oranges" finally!!

I damn near have everything running flawlessly on "9" even sig file and TV.

It's almost trustworthy. but tonight I'll return to the soothing comfort
of mga8

How long have I got until MGA-10

How long have I got until MGA-10
When it's ready. :-)

Given the amount of work involved, a release is generally done when there
is a really big new or changed feature, or there's enough differences between
cauldron and the latest release to warrant it.

The main reason mga9 was released was so that the build system could be updated.
as the build system is based on with the latest stable release, and some
packages could not be built any more without newer versions of gcc, llvm, etc.

I haven't seen any discussions yet on a schedule. There likely are not enough
differences between mga9 and cauldron to warrant the amount of work involved
to start building and testing mga10.

That will be up to the council, which is made up of the team leaders.

Don't forget, skipping a release means doing a clean install. The obsoletes
in rpm packages are written to handle the prior release during upgrade, and
are unlikely to work after skipping a release. Same with the scriplets that
alter existing config files in /etc.

And just a reminder, I'm no longer leader of the qa team, the council, or the
board.

Some have floated the idea of a 9.1 release, but I don't believe we are
ready for that yet. There's a large wave of Plasma application updates
in the pipeline, for example, and they would need to be cleared by QA first.

A 9.1 release would be like previous .1 releases, where the install isos
would contain packages that have been updated since the original Mageia
9 release. That's mostly for newcomers to Mageia 9, so that they don't
have as many updates to get at the end of the install. Anyone who has
already installed Mageia 9 and kept it fully updated would have the same
thing.

BTW, I am the current QA team leader, formerly Dave's deputy. As such, I
am on the Council, but I am not on the board. I'm just trying very hard
to fill Dave's shoes, with some limited success. Fortunately, he still
has had my back when I really need it.

I did search for task-video-codec; nothing - not entirely surprised.
Helps if the correct names are used. :-)
$ rpm -q task-codec-audio task-codec-video
task-codec-audio-9-1.mga9.tainted
task-codec-video-9-1.mga9.tainted
Oops. That's what I get for typing from memory.

Make sure task-audio-codec and task-video-codec are installed. While it
shouldn't be necessary for playback, it wouldn't hurt to install the
tainted versions of those two tasks.
TJ
OK How do I check on those
rpm -qa|grep codec

Damn I should have known that. I have used it lots of times.

More and more mental blocks. Blindsided by the immediate drama

Thanks
