Discussion:
Cannot watch TV shows on Firefox or Chrome

Mageia 2
Firefox 17.9
Shockwave 11.2.202.297

Chrome google-chrome-stable-29.0.1547.76-223446
Shockwave 11.8.800.170

Trying to watch the shows on www.globaltv.ca The ads (I do not have
adblocker on for chrome) play fine in chrome. But the show does not. It
just sits there forever with a blank screen or with "buffering"

on firefox, adblocker blocks the ads, but all I ever get is the
buffering indicator. It indicated that the whole thing was downloaded
(red line across the bottom of the screen) but it kept saying buffering
0% and never ( 20 min) played the show.

Tried both Ironsides and NCIS and both behaved the same way.

I finally tried Explorer on Windows on that same machine, and it worked
and showed the show and the ads (yuck)

One other stations (www.ctv.ca, www.cbc.ca) the shows show fine, so
there is something about my machine, linux, and globaltv.

Any way of fixing this?

By the way, what is replacing shockwave now that Adobe has stopped
supporting Linux?

Just tried it with Mageia 3 and the latest Firefox, and apparently
"Global" TV isn't available on my part of the globe. At least that's the
message I got when trying to view NCIS. Must be for Canadians only.

Did you try the Windows versions of Firefox and/or Chrome?

The latest Chrome for Linux should contain the latest Shockwave, which
is now incompatible with Firefox. You might have to edit your
preferences to disable the 11.2.x version, though. I believe the newer
Windows version of Shockwave does work with the Windows Firefox, but
can't confirm through personal experience.

Yes, most of those tv station web rebroadcasts aree only available on IP
addresses that look like they come from the country of the tv station.

No I tried Windows Explorer since that was all that was installed (I
only ever use Windows to do my taxes and then send them out to the gov't
via Linux so I have no reason to install things like Firefox or chrome
on Windows).

My chrome contains Shockwave 11.8 which is a lot closer to the latest
than my three year old Windows machine. Ie, I do not think it is a
shockwave problem, but do not know.

Confirmed here. Works ok in a w7 vb guest in firefox and opera, but
not in the Mageia 3 x86_64 host. Both are using the same nameserver, so
it isn't a blocking issue. Only way to fix it, would be to get the
scripts fixed, though figuring out which is causing the problem won't
be easy.

Flash is gradually being replaced by html5, with direct video embedding.

But that is going to take years to roll out. (ie, all the sources will
be behind so one may still need shockwave for a while).
So there is no drop in replacement for Shockwave for Linux anymore?

Flash is still supported for linux, in that security updates are being
released for the current version, but new versions are only available
with the chrome browser.

While it often crashes, I find reloading the page and switching to
fullscreen mode as soon as the video starts playing, will usually work.

On most TV station's web broadcast everything works fine. Sometime Linux
has trouble keeping up and things may get stuttery (donot know why
windows seems to do much better at keeping the flow going). But on this
one particular station, it seems that does not work on the
broadcasts--flash does not seem to understand that it can start showing
the movie, and thinks it needs to buffer more. (eg the buffer stays at
0% always, even though the bar at the bottom will show more than half
the show downloaded).
Ie, something in this site confuses my shockwave badly, both on chrome
and on firefox.

Even stranger. On my home machine (mandriva 9.1, firefox 16.02,
Shockwave 10.3.183-- ie, much older than my Mageia 2 laptop which
launched my complaint in this thread--
www.globaltv.com shows work fine. It complains that it wants a newer
version of the browser, but the shows work fine.

Why would newer versions of Firefox/chrome/shock not work, but older
versions work?

Yes. Hunt down the people at globaltv and have a stern conversation
with them. Right is on your side, but your chances of success are slim.

Seems very much like the technically perverse problem with the
Australian Broadcasting Commission's /iview/ service.

They are trying to protect the intellectual property of stuff
that is being digitally broadcast. They really need to get the
lawers and the techies together for a reality check.

Some sites demand a version of flash that has not been - and
possibly never will be - released for Linux. However it is
possible to use the version supplied with Chrome, not Chomium.

Google for Linux, pepper, flash, and iview.
