I left the computer running some tasks and went to sleep. When I went to
use the computer again there was just a completely black screen with
just the pointer arrow showing. It responded to mouse movements and
nothing else.

I restarted the computer, the window manager was changed from KDE to an
unknown window manager.

I created a user but the window manager did not change back to KDE.

Sounds like kde plasma is failing to start so it's falling back to icewm.
Right click on the desktop for the menu iirc.

Reboot, at the login screen double check the "Session" and make sure it's
set to Plasma, and then login.

If it still starts icewm instead, open a terminal from the desktop menu and
check the output of "journalctl -b --no-hostname" for obvious errors.

I did what you indicated. A huge amount of text appeared and a line in
red said to try to reinstall Qt. Using only "qt" with urpmi got no
result. I would need to know the exact package name. I ended up doing it
the rough way, I reinstalled Mageia 8.
